The Life and Mission of a Social Reformer
Hossain Mohammad Salim
A Pioneer Social Reformer
Hossain Mohammad Salim is a prominent figure in Bangladesh, renowned as the Imam of the non-political movement Hezbut Tawheed. His unwavering opposition to the injustices rooted in the current social system has earned him widespread recognition.
Birth and Education
Born on November 28, 1972, in Porkara village, Noakhali, Mr. Salim hails from a distinguished Muslim family. His father, Nurul Haque, was a respected public figure who served as an elected representative for over two decades. His mother, Hosne-Ara Begum, played a crucial role in shaping his early life and values.
He began his education at a local Maktab. After completing primary and secondary school, he graduated first in his class with a Bachelor of Social Science (BSS) degree and later obtained a Master’s degree in Political Science from Jagannath University.
Social Activities and Hezbut Tawheed
Motivated by a deep concern for justice, he immersed himself in social activities. In 1999, he met Mohammad Bayazeed Khan Panni, the founder of Hezbut Tawheed. His organizational skills, eloquence, and dedication earned him trust, and following the founder’s passing in 2012, the leadership was entrusted to him.
Since then, Mr. Salim has tirelessly traveled across Bangladesh, delivering speeches on the true teachings of Islam. Under his guidance, the movement has grown into a strong ideological force opposing extremism, sectarianism, misogyny, and other societal ills.
Uncompromising Ideals and Struggles
Mr. Salim argues that extremism is an ideological disease that must be fought with a superior ideology rooted in true Islam. He is also a formidable voice against the commercialization of religion and divisive politics, advocating instead for a unifying ideology based on truth and justice. He has detailed his vision for a cohesive and just society in his speeches and writings.
Furthermore, he steadfastly opposes the misuse of Islam for political gain by parties that distort religious teachings to secure votes while engaging in destructive activities in the name of democracy.
A Champion of Empowerment and Development
Guided by Islamic principles, he has dedicated himself to dismantling communal divisions through thousands of conferences. He has also boldly challenged misguided decrees against women, encouraging their active participation in society. To guide wayward youth, he has established over fifty sports and cultural organizations across the country.
To combat poverty, he has spearheaded over fifty development projects in his village, including farms, factories, a high school, and food processing industries, creating thousands of jobs and transforming a rural area into a model of modern development. Sparking a renaissance begins with transforming the human mind, a mission he has passionately pursued through his ten published books, newspapers, and extensive online presence.
Victim of Extremist Attacks & Conclusion
Due to his progressive views, Mr. Salim has faced repeated attacks from extremist groups. His residence has been assaulted four times, resulting in significant looting, arson, and the brutal murder of two members in 2016. Despite these severe threats, he remains undeterred and resolutely continues his mission.
Hossain Mohammad Salim is a living legend whose mission is to forge a society marked by justice, tolerance, and peace. He calls upon all peace-loving citizens to join in expanding this noble vision across Bangladesh.
