Human Chain and Protest Rally Held Against Attacks on Hezbut Tawheed Women

Dhaka, 12 May 2024- A human chain and protest rally were held in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka to protest attacks and harassment against female members of Hezbut Tawheed. The program, organized by the Central Women’s Wing of Hezbut Tawheed, began at 10:00 AM on Sunday.

The event was presided over by Taslima Islam, a divisional women’s leader of Dhaka. Rufaida Panni, Central Secretary for Women’s Affairs, attended as the chief guest. In her speech, she stated that Hezbut Tawheed is working for the empowerment and rights of women. She alleged that a group of religious extremists is spreading misinformation and issuing false fatwas to incite violence against women associated with the organization.

Addressing the female members, she encouraged them to continue their work for justice and social reform, describing it as both a religious and human right. She urged them to remain strong and not be discouraged by threats or obstacles.

The program was conducted by Sharmin Sultana Chaiti, Central Secretary for Interfaith Communication. Other speakers included Dr. Mahbub Alam Mahfuz, Amir of Dhaka Division, and SM Samsul Huda, Central Information Secretary, among others. Speakers called on the government and authorities to take firm action against those responsible for such attacks.

A large number of women leaders and activists from different divisions, districts, and upazilas participated in the event. Following the human chain, a protest march was held from the Press Club through Paltan and returned to the same venue. The streets were filled with participants chanting slogans demanding justice and protection of women’s rights.
